Abstract

Drug abuse remains a major public health problem requiring comprehensive rehabilitation approaches. The success of drug rehabilitation is not only determined by the cessation of drug use but also by individuals’ readiness to change their behavior during the recovery process. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) explains behavioral change as a gradual process through several stages of readiness; therefore, identifying changes in behavioral stages is important for evaluating rehabilitation programs. This study aimed to identify changes in behavioral change stages among drug rehabilitation clients based on the Transtheoretical Model before and after individual counseling at the Pratama Clinic of the National Narcotics Board of Sidoarjo Regency. This study employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 30 outpatient drug rehabilitation clients selected through total sampling. Behavioral change stages were measured using the University Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) instrument. Data were analyzed using the Friedman test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Before receiving individual counseling, most clients were in the contemplation stage (18 clients; 60%), while 12 clients (40%) were in the precontemplation stage. After receiving individual counseling, all clients were classified in the action stage (30 clients; 100%). The Friedman test showed a significant difference in behavioral change stages before and after individual counseling (p = 0.000). Changes in behavioral change stages were observed after individual counseling among drug rehabilitation clients based on the Transtheoretical Model. The URICA instrument can be used as an evaluation approach to monitor clients’ readiness for behavioral change during drug rehabilitation programs.
